Your growth, rooted in acceptance

You don't need to have everything figured out before getting in touch. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, disconnected from yourself, or simply carrying more than feels manageable, this can be a chance to pause, reflect, and start making sense of what's happening.
Counselling isn't about being told what do to

A bit about me
My name is Mark. Growing up in a working-class community in Northumberland helped shape my values of kindness, resilience, authenticity and looking out for others. Today, those same values continue to guide my work as a person-centred counsellor.
The possibility of counselling can feel daunting, especially if you're not quite sure what's wrong, don't have the right words, or are simply carrying more than you let others see.
I offer a place where you can talk openly about what's going on, without being judged or told what you should do. My role isn't to give you answers or tell you how to live your life, but to listen, understand and work things through with you. Together, we can make sense of your experiences, understand what matters to you and consider what you want to do next.
People rarely change because somebody tells them what to do. They change because they begin to understand themselves differently.

You don't need to have the right words, the perfect explanation, or all the answers before coming to counselling
Who I can support...
Everyone's experience is different. I welcome clients of all backgrounds, identities and circumstances, and aim to offer a counselling space where people feel respected, heard and accepted. You may be experiencing..
... a sense that something isn't right, even if you can't explain why
... constant worry, overthinking or feeling on edge
... low confidence, self-doubt or being overly critical of yourself
... stress, pressure, burnout or feeling emotionally exhausted
... anger, frustration or difficulty managing emotions
... grief, loss or significant life changes
... relationship difficulties or feeling disconnected from others
... a loss of direction, purpose or identity
... knowing you're not OK, but struggling to find the words
... uncertainty about counselling or whether it can help
Whatever brings you here, you don't need a diagnosis or a clear explanation to begin counselling. I'll offer a calm, confidential and accepting presence where you can explore whatever is important to you, at your own pace. Together, we can make sense of your experiences, understand what may be keeping you stuck, and help you move towards the life you want to live.

How counselling can help
It is a space where you can speak openly without judgement, explore your experiences at your own pace, and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.
Many people find that counselling helps them:
- Feel less overwhelmed
- Understand patterns in their thoughts and relationships
- Build self-acceptance
- Develop confidence and resilience
- Process difficult experiences
- Feel more connected to themselves and others

Acceptance
You don't need to perform, impress or have the right words. If you have no idea what to say or how to start, that's okay.
Counselling is not about getting it right. It's about having a space where you can be yourself, exactly as you are.
Why Choose Ash Roots Counselling?
Understanding
Together, we can explore your experiences and make sense of what is happening in your life.
You bring your experiences, thoughts and feelings. I bring a confidential, supportive and accepting space in which to explore them.
Growth
Counselling isn't about fixing you. It's about helping you reconnect with your own strengths, values and resources.
My hope is that you leave sessions feeling understood rather than analysed, accepted rather than judged, and more connected to yourself rather than in need of fixing.
Sometimes we simply need the right space, support and understanding to recognise possibilities we could not previously see
Men's mental health
Although I work with men and women, I understand how many men grow up believing they should cope alone, keep going, and avoid talking about difficult emotions.
Counselling offers a different possibility: a space where you can speak openly, without judgement or expectation. While I work with adults of all genders, I have a particular interest in supporting men who may be struggling with stress, anxiety, anger, self-esteem, loss of purpose or relationship difficulties.

My hope is that you leave sessions feeling understood rather than analysed, accepted rather than judged, and more connected to yourself rather than in need of fixing.
